When people think trains, they think big, industrial-sized equipment — and a lot of it. Our Mechanical team inspects and maintains a fleet of more than 8,000 high-horsepower diesel locomotives and approximately 225,000 railcars — everything from boxcars to flatcars to hoppers.

While Mechanical work might include overhauling a diesel engine or welding a railcar, the tasks can also be intricate, such as calibrating electrical systems or closely inspecting a fuel component. The skills needed are broad ranging, but all require a focus on being safe, thorough and precise.

Our more than 7,000 Mechanical employees work shifts around the clock to ensure our trains are in top shape and meet BNSF and government safety requirements. Some of that work is outdoors, refueling locomotives or inspecting and repairing freight cars in the yard. Other work may be performed inside our large diesel or car shops, repairing, maintaining, testing or inspecting equipment — any number of functions to ensure those big wheels keep on turning.

Mechanical employees generally have a set shift (1st, 2nd or 3rd), which may include nights, weekends, holidays or being on call for emergencies. The majority of employees in Mechanical are scheduled (union-represented).
