Summary

This is a great opportunity to get exposure to Transportation and operation activities on the NOC floor.  This role will be exposed to cross-functional team and department experience and ability to manage a large project from a technical and functional perspective.  

 

This engineer will have a unique opportunity to hone their technical skills, while developing their program management, time management, business acumen, vendor management, and budgeting skills.  The engineer will leverage expertise and proficiency to help deliver the Movement Planner and Throughput Planner initiatives. The engineer leverages a thorough knowledge of existing and planned enterprise capabilities, software development best practices, and general technology expertise to create and influence technical design and architecture of complex, integrated systems comprised of a combination of vendor products, open source, and custom developed software. The primary business outcome for this role is to deliver resilient, high-quality, technology products that align with business processes that align with operations initiatives for driving down costs and improving network efficiencies.

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Facilitate collaboration and consensus building between other engineers to define, deliver, and improve technology solutions that solve business problems while positioning the BNSF technology ecosystem for future success
  • Influence the guiding principles to be used as an aid in decision making when creating and delivering software solutions
  • Influence the creation of high-level technical designs and integration architectures that are scalable, secure, and supportable while meeting business expectations related to complex business / technical opportunities
  • Assist in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and solution implementation within multiple technology areas
  • Evaluate system performance and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Use an understanding of downstream impacts of changes in complex, inter-related systems to avoid unintended consequences associated with software development
  • Consult and advise with development teams on software development best practices
  • Partner with development teams to create development guidelines to be used by external development resources
  • Identify, monitor and manage project/program risks and issues in a timely and unbiased manner; follow governance standards for escalating to right levels at the right time
  • Provide transparent reporting and metrics on project/program health (scope, schedule and budget), and support all communications related to project delivery process
  • Collaborate with other functions (governance and change enablement) to ensure consistency, compliance and user adoptions
  • Drive initiatives from both a tactical and strategic perspective, and manage interdependencies
  • Develop and manage project/program budgets - track, collate and analyze planned vs actual values for time and cost; take corrective/preventive actions as warranted
  • Capture, publish and refresh project/program records (as appropriate), such as key decisions and action items, meeting minutes, risks and issues
  • Responsibility for providing direction to contractors and/or consultants.
  • Participates in the development and execution of project plan and resource allocation.
  • Remain abreast of application development technology trends and advise application development leaders on potential opportunities for improvement
  • Analyzes, designs, and programs for moderate business problems according to user specifications and technical specifications. May recommend and develop detail program specifications.  Complies with project methodology requirements as appropriate.
  • Perform troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and solution implementation within specific technology areas.  
  • Leverages external resources to solve problems.
  • Provides timely and accurate progress information. 
  • Interacts with stakeholders as required by project objectives. 
  • Communicates and recommends solutions in a timely manner. 
  • Translates technical information to a non-technical audience.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with preference in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or Business, and/or equivalent formal training, certifications or work experience. 
  • Minimum of 6 years of work experience in an Information Technology environment
  • Knowledge of software development, practice, concepts, and technology and methodology obtained through formal training, education, and/or work experience.
  • Ensures that systems function appropriately and are technically sound. 
  • In depth experience in one or more domains or broad experience in multiple domains. 
  • Understands continuous integration and delivery concepts.
  • Expert with Open Source technologies and modern development techniques
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience with DevOps, Continuous Delivery and Deployment
  • Proficient in designing and implementing an Event Driven Architecture (EDA) and systems
  • Possesses sound engineering principles with the ability to apply said principles
  • Ability to support enterprise-wide solutions and platforms
  • Proven ability to implement (i.e., code) the solutions he/she has designed
  • Expert ability to influence the design and architecture of multiple, highly integrated and complex systems
  • Proficient with distributed, multithreaded, and real-time systems
  • Proficient knowledge of effective problem solving and identifying innovative solutions
  • Expert relationship building skills, including the capacity to predict and manage behavior, build and leverage cross-functional partnerships within and outside of the organization, and leverage influential leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and identify downstream impacts of changes within complex software systems
  • Demonstrated ability to consult and advise on best practices for software development and technology adoption
  • Demonstrated ability to improve feature team processes and capabilities continuously
  • Proficient ability to analyze new technology and recommend adoption to address complex issues
  • Proficient ability to leverage external resources to solve problems
  • Proficient ability to remain highly effective under stress, and respond to pressure in a manner acceptable to others and the organization
