This position has the potential to be a hybrid position with up to 50% remote work with department approval. Successful candidate must live within a reasonable distance of the Kansas City, KS office.

  • Design, prepare and distribute plans and specifications for maintenance and replacement construction of railroad structures
  • Delegate to, supervise, and lead design consultants who provide bridge engineering services including surveying, geotechnical investigations, permitting, structural design, construction plan preparation, and specification writing
  • Requisition structural and construction materials per design plans and specifications
  • Prepare preliminary and final detailed construction cost estimates
  • Assemble contract bid documents and manage construction contracts
  • Provide technical structural engineering assistance to field supervision for major bridge construction projects, for assessments of damage following accidents involving structures and for complex maintenance work to aging structures



  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree program
  • Must have the ability to analyze engineering and design problems and establish and apply relevant criteria
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of structural analysis, steel and concrete design techniques, strengths of materials, and bridge design requirements
  • Knowledge in the construction, inspection and maintenance of bridges, and their component parts
  • Must be self-directed, motivated and have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have the ability to communicate well, one on one, and in groups
  • Must be safety conscious and able to support and contribute to a strong safety process
  • Good supervisory and leadership skills
  • Must have basic CAD (computer-aided design) knowledge
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)



  • A Professional Engineer's license in a state or states in which the BNSF operates is desirable
  • Knowledge of structures construction standards and Maintenance of Way Standards, Maintenance of Way and Bridge Worker Safety Rules
  • Previous work experience in structural engineering 
  • Familiar with FRA and OSHA standards
  • Strong working knowledge of safe railroad operations and practices
  • Experience with movable bridges is a plus
  • Working knowledge of hydrology and stream flow hydraulics, surveying, permitting and steel bridge fabrication
  • Working knowledge of standards, requirements and specifications as outlined by BNSF, AREMA and governmental agencies

TRAVEL: Approximately 10%

COVID-19 Federal Vaccine Mandate


The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect all aspects of our lives. From the onset, BNSF’s goals have remained the same: keep our people safe and maintain our essential operations. While we maintained that the decision to be vaccinated for COVID-19 is a personal one, we also encouraged employees to consider the options and make the best decision for themselves and their families.


 Under President Biden’s COVID-19 Action Plan, BNSF is covered by the federal mandate requiring vaccination.  Effective December 8, 2021, BNSF has paused its implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate given the dynamic legal proceedings.  The ultimate outcome of the federal contractor vaccine mandate is yet to be determined. It is still possible that the mandate, as it applies to BNSF, could be upheld in court in the near future.  If this happens, BNSF employees would be required to be vaccinated.
